The word Reiki is actually two Japanese words - Rei, meaning universal, transcendent or sacred, and ki, meaning life-force energy. Haleya Priest, my teacher and founder of Pioneer Valley Reiki, describes Reiki as the Life Force Energy we are formed from and surrounded by - the healing energy of the Universe. Giving Reiki is one of the most meaningful ways I can be of service.
No, I don't see auras, talk much about chakras or consider myself to be particularly "New Age." But I do believe in the power of Reiki...because I see it works. Gentle and non-invasive, Reiki is a hands-on healing practice that can address issues in the mental, emotional, physical and spiritual realms. I mostly work with Hospice patients but recently I've been giving Reiki to my step-father, Peter.
Today Peter was at Massachusetts General Hospital undergoing open heart surgery. After giving him a little Reiki yesterday evening, I asked him to write his name on a piece of paper. I carried that paper with me throughout the day, using it to send distance healing as we were taught in the second level of Reiki training. I also sent a request out to friends and family for their thoughts, prayers and healing energy.
Perhaps it's a just a placebo, making me feel better to be able to do something. But I don't think so. Albert Einstein theorized that space and time are intertwined. Physicist David Bohm discovered Non-Locality which means that everything is joined or connected together. Matter and energy are two poles of the same unity. Known by some as quantum physics theory, I understand it as our fundamental interconnection.
When Peter's five-hour operation went "perfectly" according to the surgeon today, it's just one more confirmation that the one does affect the all, and that energy is a tremendously powerful force for manifesting reality. And it seems to me that Reiki is a perfect example of this principle in action. Peter, by the way, is doing great!
