Last night I dreamed about getting engaged. It wasn't the same ring or the same proposal, but the same feelings of anticipation and almost overwhelming excitement, joy and love. I awoke today with a big, bright heart. In real life, after getting engaged we plunged headlong into wedding planning, with its seemingly endless details, negotiations and to-do lists... Truthfully, it was hard for me, and for us as a couple. I wish I had been able to enjoy it more. Over the years I've come to realize that "being engaged" is a unique and special stage in a relationship: different than dating, and unlike marriage. It's not just the time you need to plan your wedding, and it's not just waiting until you're married. It is the powerful threshold through which you will step from one reality to another...and to which you will never again return. It is a time to literally BE ENGAGED with each other; to speak honestly, listen deeply and love tenderly. It is a period of great intention and attention as you expand and refine your sense of togetherness.
It is a time to offer the fullness of yourselves, giving and receiving one another in the grace of being chosen...for THIS is your person, your partner, your other half! I know wedding planning can be stressful and a whole lot of work. Really, I know. But remember, too: this is the time you have longed for. NOW is what you have dreamed.
